Servicemembers & Deployment
Storing Property, Protecting Property and Pets
Single servicemembers may need help in taking care of their household items, safeguarding their home and planning for pets they are leaving behind during a deployment.
-
Renters
If you are renting an apartment or home, it may be beneficial to break your lease to save on rent money and to then put your belongings in storage. You may also need to cancel utilities and to possibly find a place to park your car to protect it from the weather, theft and parking tickets.
-
Security
Designate someone you trust to routinely check your home for any signs of burglary and to perform routine lawn care if applicable.
-
Pets
During deployments, military bases are overrun with cats and dogs that servicemembers leave behind in the rush to mobilize. To avoid this, single soldiers should designate someone beforehand to take care of their pets while they are away or consider giving their pets up for adoption. Keep up-to-date records of a pet’s shots and medications to give to the person or agency that takes the pet. Also provide the contact information for the pet’s veterinarian.
