As we come upon the culmination of the 2007 regular season, what better time to take a look back at a once again memorable and unpredictable season. For the first time in the history of the game, a team sits at 15-0 going into its final contest in the regular season. Thankfully, Congress has pressured the NFL Network into putting the Patriots-Giants game on national television. It will be broadcasted simultaneously on the NFL Network, CBS and NBC. Unfortunately the game feed will come courtesy of the NFL Network, which means a majority of the country will get its first exposure to I like to call The Bryant Gumbel Experience. What you will witness Saturday Night will be some of the worst play-by-play to ever grace the airwaves of Free TV. If you like your announcers to routinely butcher players’ names, make on-air mistakes about the most simplistic rules of the game, sound like they’re in a library, and take themselves way too seriously, then Gumbel is the guy for you. I recommend watching the game on mute and using the ESPN Radio feed for the color commentary.

But before the playoffs get underway, lets look back at some of the biggest surprises and storylines of the NFL season.

Image Problem?
Tank Johnson. Pacman Jones. Michael Vick. All are remarkably talented all-Pro players. They were all also suspended for the entire season due to off the field run-ins with the law. From making-it-rain to dog fighting, it’s clear that the NFL has definitely seen better days in terms of public approval of its athlete’s behavior. But while this “gang culture"  seriously hindered the popularity of the NBA, it appears to have had no such effect on the NFL. Ask me to explain why this is and I am at a loss for words. What I will say is that by acting swiftly and harshly in dealing out his punishment, Goodell has shown that he will do whatever it takes for his sport to avoid what seemed the plague the NBA for years.

Surprise!
Thought by most to be two of the worst teams this season, Cleveland and Minnesota now find themselves fighting for a playoff spot in the final week of the season. Purple Jesus has been absolutely sensational in his rookie year. And despite erratic, inconsistent quarterback play, the Vikings might make it to the playoffs on the strength of their running game and defense alone. Clamoring for Brady Quinn to start before the season, Browns fans found themselves rejoicing at the remarkable quarterback play of Derek Anderson. With someone who could finally get them the ball, former first-round picks Kellen Winslow Jr. and Braylon Edwards showed the kind of talent that made them worthy of their first-round selections. And really how can you not be routing for the Browns this week, unless you are a Titans fan? Arguably the NFL’s most loyal fans, Cleveland could make it back to the playoffs for the first time since Art Moddell ripped the franchise from the city many years ago.

The Fountain of Youth
You simply can’t talk about this season without mentioning Brett Favre. After two years of talking-heads calling for his retirement, the 38-year old quarterback is having one of his finest seasons. He has guided the Packers to a 12-3 record and a first-round bye. He has amassed over 4,000 yards and has 26 touchdowns to only 15 interceptions. And nobody is quite sure how this all happened. While I have never been a Packers fan, there is one scenario that I, as well as a majority of football fans, could embrace: The Gunslinger leading his Pack to the Super Bowl, meeting an 18-0 Patriots team, and Favre out Brady’s Brady to win it all and ride off into the sunset. Probably not going to happen, but we can all hope, for the betterment of the game at least.

On to the picks… (Home Team in CAPS)

This week things can get a little crazy. Playoff teams will be resting starters, so it’s going to take a little more thinking and luck to pick these games. So while on any other week you would look at Jacksonville-Houston and not hesitate to pick the Jags, it’s going to be second-stringers versus first so you might want to reconsider. When looking at these games, think in terms of starters verses non-starters, and which team wants to win the game the most. That’s how I’ll be making my picks. I’m going to be grouping my picks into categories this week in an attempt to perhaps help people devise a strategy for picking these relatively meaningless games correctly.

The No-Brainer
Patriots over GIANTS

I want to hear someone make a case for the Giants; I need a good laugh. Eli Manning had five fumbles and two picks last week. The Giants players are crying about their home fans not supporting them. Plaxico Burress is still banged up and hasn’t looked good in like five weeks. No Shockey. I smell a first round lost in Tampa.

Playin’ for a Purpose
Saints over BEARS
BROWNS over Niners
Vikings over BRONCOS
REDSKINS over Cowboys
Titans over COLTS

These are games where one team definitely needs the win a lot more than the other. Each of these teams could potentially be in the playoffs with a win, so you know they’re going to be going all out. To make these even easier to pick, the two good opponents (Cowboys and Colts) are going to be resting starters. And thankfully, the game times work out great, so a certain team won’t be eliminated before they begin play. The Saints and Browns both play at 12 and have to win to stay in contention. Even if they both win, the Redskins, Vikings, and Titans will still be able to get into the playoffs with wins, meaning there isn’t going to be any letdown. I feel rather confident about these, although the Saints playing outdoors do scare be a little.

Starters vs. Subs
FALCONS over Seahawks
PACKERS over Lions
Jaguars over TEXANS
RAVENS over Steelers
Chargers over RAIDERS
BUCS over Panthers

In these games, the playoff-bound teams are likely to rest starters for a majority of time. I think the Chargers and Jags however will each play their first teamers long enough to get a lead, as the Blotz want to lock up the three-seed so they don’t have to play the Pats in the second round, and the Jags want the same. Big Ben is likely to sit, so I’m going with the Ravens. The same is expected for Hasselbeck, and the Seahawks, aside from not being all that great, play lousy on the road. I think Aaron Rodgers is good enough to pick apart a pathetic Lions defense and ditto for Luke McCown against the Peppers-less Panthers (say that five times fast).

Playin’ for the Paycheck
Bills over EAGLES
Bengals over DOLPHINS
CARDINALS over Rams
JETS over Chiefs

Absolutely nothing at stake in these games except pride. I think the Bills are simply better than the Eagles. The Dolphins and Rams are inept, and playing reasonably good teams. The Jets should take care of Chiefs in a poor-weather slugfest. However, no one really has any clue about these. I can’t judge whether or not players on these teams have already given up, or if they will continue to play hard. These games I would simply pick, and hope.

Let me present a point to ponder as we await this most anticipated (why?) game. If Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds' records are in doubt, and their place in the HOF in jeopardy, then why are we not saying the same about the PROVEN steroid use in the Patriots organization? Is it a double standard? Is Rodney "RoidFreak" Harrison exempt?

And another thing. These sportscasters keep saying that no team has ever gone 16-0. Uhhhhhh, the '72 Dolphins are 17-0. Until the Patriots go 18-0, they haven't done a dang thing that hasn't been done before.

With that said, good luck to the Patriots fans. And something I thought I would NEVER say as a Cowboys fan, GO G-MEN!!!!

Another question. After watching the extremely boring 2 hours of pregame for this game, ask yourselves this. Has Randy Moss EVER caught a pass without a blatant pushoff? Is the NFL THAT committed to letting this team go 16-0 that they allow these blatant pushoffs? I point to the 4th down catch on the Patriots first drive and the first TD. Yeah, I didn't even mention the tackle Moss made on the DB on the first TD drive. Ridiculous what this guy gets away with. He's the Jordan of the 90's. He doesn't commit a foul I guess.

Say what you want. Completely undeserved. Horrible officiating.

Look who's whining again. Oh, hi there Griff.

Well, both Brady and Moss broke the individual records for most TD's caught. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that Brady is the greatest quarterback of all time, and with that 2nd half showing, they should just induct him into the hall of fame immediately. It just doesn't get any better than this, unless of course you wait until the Patriots take their 4th super bowl ring of the century by beating the Cowboys again. Go Patriot nation ! ! ! Ya just gotta love it!

ptsd,

I did that in memory of your pissing and moaning about officiating after you won. Dude, you have a receiver that can commit any foul and get away with it. If you disagree, then you admit that you truly know absolutely NOTHING about this game. Which I'm sure everyone will agree with.

I can't wait to beat the crap out of your sorry a** team. They have struggled against every NFC East team this year except the Redskins. Hey dude, we have Garrett calling our plays, not Kevin Gilbride. The groundwork has been laid. You BARELY beat the 5th seed in the NFC. IF your NFL favored team makes it to the SuperBowl, you're done. I'm actually happy. I want the Cowboys to be the team that makes your 18-1 season absolutely meaningless. By the way, you haven't done a d**n thing the Dolphins haven't done first. They're 17-0. You got 2 more games to beat 'em SUCKA!!!!

Hey, make sure Harrison gets some more Testosterone. He's gonna need it to beat the 'Boys. Just like he needed it to beat everyone else this year. LMAO **************************************

julie,

You are correct my dear. I'm still calling it a Colts/Cowboys SuperBowl. The Pats ain't squat. The pressure is too great. If the G-Men can d**n near beat 'em I know our teams can do it.

Happy New Year Everyone !

I have some particularly important cyber sports ‘Happy New Year’ greetings to give out here.

Happy New Year to all of VA Joe’s real and fantasy football fans alike for making this 2007 season so memorable, and so darn amusing.

Happy New Year to Julie, Charlie, and with a highly deserved honorable mention to Griff himself.

Happy New Year to the 13 NFL teams that gave it their best in a losing effort to the super Patriots this year.

Happy New Year to NBC and ABC for allowing America to watch the most anticipated football game in history.

Happy New Year to Don Schula, Mercury Morris, and the entire 1972 Miami Dolphin football team for being such classy (wink) sports throughout this entire season.

Happy New Year to Peyton Manning and Jerry Rice for their role as innocent bystanders in watching their record’s go down in flames.

Happy New Year to 3 N.Y. sports teams and to their well-wishing fans alike; that being the Yankees, the Jets, and especially the Giants in helping to make 2007 the most memorable year ever.

May 2008 be a ‘super’ year for everyone !

The Kid

Ps:  I’ve got connections to some of the more reputable clothing outfitters here in the New England area. Football jerseys, hats, sweatshirts et al are already made sporting the 2007-2008 Patriot super bowl champions logo nicely detailed on the front and sometimes on the back. We’ve got all sizes including the much sought after 4X and 5X sizes for those sports couch potato enthusiasts. Please contact me immediately for your order. They’re selling like hotcakes, and the price is very reasonable, if I do say so myself. Sure hope Julie reconsiders my offer to send her a jersey or two.

Let me clarify a couple of items. They may be making shirts ( I doubt it since I personally know two of the "Legal Manufacturers" in the area and they do not go with the shirts until game day. The Hats and shirts for the players are made the week of the superbowl. If you have any ahead of time they are counterfit and subject to seizure and jail time plus fines here in Mass. I spent many years with Pats Security and have assisted numerous court dates for these people as well as the concerts at the stadium. The last item is it is my deal with Jules for the shirt if you remember correctly she has some problems dealing with you and your un-gentlemanly ways.

It was a great game last evening and once again the Pats stepped up when it counted and won. Lets hope we can keep it up. Records in books only look good for stats. Rings on fingers look great in the press and that is what makes the end for the season regardless what your overall record is.

hey griff, i liked the way you presented yourself for most of the seson, but it would appear you have LOST your ability to crunch the numbers, i'm referring to the comment about the PATS record being 'only' 16-0, umm, has anyone else done that in the regular season? the previously mentioned DOLPHINS only went 14-0 in their regular season, i hope i don't have to remind you that there are TWO seasons every year in the NFL, regular season AND post season. now i'm not a die-hard PATS fan, so don't take my sticking up for them as nothing more than supporting the facts, although i DO feel the time has come to break this record, and i might rather see someone else to do it first, at the moment there is noone else who CAN do it, so i'll take what i can get. the fact IS, NOONE else has EVER gone 16-0 in a REGULAR season, the PATS HAVE MADE HISTORY!! they have gone ahead of the DOLPHINS in that regard and will forever be #1 in that category in the hall of fame until it happens again, which just might never occur, in our lifetime anyway. i do realize that this accomplishment will not mean much to ALOT of folks, if they don't go ahead and become superbowl champs, but their record will still stand as the first team to go 16-0, that is all.

Congratulations Mac,

Patriots seem invincible. What a season.

I'm not a Redskins fan particularly but Joe Gibbs is a Sentimental favorite for me. I don't think they can beat the Pat's

Pat's look real good my friend.

While no one may have gone 16-0 in the REGULAR season, you are arguing semantics here my friend. The SEASON is not over until the SuperBowl has been played. They don't issue the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the end of the regular season. If they did, the Chargers would have won it last year. But no, they lost in their first playoff game. If the Patriots lose any of their next 3 games, they will NOT finish the season undefeated. As the 17-0 Dolphins did. My point is, everyone is saying "they have gone 16-0, something no one else has done." Yes, someone else has done it. In fact, someone else went 17-0.

I'm getting really concerned about Griff's Cowboys. Two minutes left in their game against the Skins and they're losing by 3 touchdowns--same amount they lost to the Patriots on an earlier date. No touchdowns for the Cowboys this week, and no touchdowns for the Cowboys last week against Philly. Everyone with any football savvy knows that the serious teams need to be playing well at the end of the season to keep that all-important momentum going. My concern is that the Cowboys may not be meeting the Patriots in the super bowl. Please tell or show me how I'm wrong with this assessment og the Cowboys from the inferior NFC league. Btw, the Cowboys running game today produced a whopping + 1 yard gain, and this was with their starters in the game. They sure do look dangerous for the upcoming playoffs.

Never step on a sleeping dogs tail. Never pull on a trip wire to see what is on the other end! Never but never under estimate the enemy and never make an excuse.

These are lessons well learned by some of us old folks.

The village idiot opens his mouth again. What a freakin' moronic jackass this guy is. Please, please, please underestimate us in February. Continue to think you are invincible. Dude, until you learn something about football, shut up. Please. The Cowboys weren't playing their starters. They had 5 Pro Bowlers sitting out today. What team sits 5 Pro Bowlers against a team playing for a playoff spot and wins? This was completely expected. I told my Dad 3 days ago the Redskins would win. They didn't have half their offensive line in the game. The game meant nothing. We rested our starters for the games that count. And it will show come playoff time. Some teams realize the importance of resting starters. Others will learn it the hard way.

Griff tell us what you really think. LOL I still like my response is better. You gotta relax a little be more subtle and less derisive.

Go celtics! Looks like the colts are down. All the Kid will have to do is change the names in his previous rant and we will have a new "experience" to dwell over.
