Eligibility

Find SchoolsYou must meet the three requirements below to be eligible for Top-Up. If you meet these requirements, VAJoe.com can help you find schools where you can use your Top-Up benefits.

  1. Tuition Assistance

    Be approved for Tuition Assistance.

  2. MGIB-AD

    Be eligible for MGIB-AD benefits.

  3. Two Years Active Duty

    Be an active duty servicemember who has served at least two full years on active duty.

If This Is Your First Time Filing an MGIB-AD Claim

  1. Request Tuition Assistance from your service branch.

  2. Complete an Application for VA Education Benefits form (VA Form 22-1990).

  3. On the form, indicate “Top-Up” in item 1A under the MGIB-Active Duty block.

  4. Send your Tuition Assistance approval form and your Application for VA Education Benefits form to the VA regional office that handles your claim.

If You've Been Approved for MGIB-AD Benefits Before

  1. Submit your signed Tuition Assistance approval form to the VA regional office that handles your claim.
