Eligibility

Find SchoolsYou must meet the five requirements below to be eligible for MGIB-SR. Furthermore, depending upon your circumstances, you may have 10 or 14 years of MGIB-SR eligibility. See the 10 or 14 Years of Eligibility tables at the bottom of this page to see which category you fall into. If you are elgible, VAJoe.com can help you find schools.

  1. Six-Year Obligation

    You must have a six-year obligation to the Selected Reserve, signed after June 30, 1985.
    • If you are an officer, you must have agreed to serve six years in addition to your original obligation.
    • For some types of training, a six-year commitment that began after Sept. 30, 1990, is required.

  2. Initial Active Duty for Training

    Your initial active duty for training (IADT) must be completed.

  3. Diploma

    You must have received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate before completing IADT.
    • You may not use 12 hours earned toward a college degree to meet this requirement.

  4. Good Standing

    You must maintain good standing while serving in an active Selected Reserve unit.

  5. Eligibility if Deactivated

    You will maintain eligibility if you were deactivated under any of these conditions:
    • Your Reserve or National Guard unit was deactivated from Oct. 1, 1991, through Sept. 30, 1995. You maintain 14 years of eligibility for benefits.
    • You were involuntarily separated, such as because of a force reduction, from Reserve or National Guard service from Oct. 1, 1991, through Sept. 30, 1995. You maintain 14 years of eligibility for benefits.
    • You were discharged from the Selected Reserve due to a disability that was not caused by misconduct. Your eligibility period may be extended if you are ordered to active duty.

10 Years of Eligibility
  After Oct. 1, 1992 =
14 Years of Eligibility

If your eligibility began before Oct. 1, 1992:

  • Your eligibility ends 10 years from your beginning date of eligibility.

or

  • Your eligibility ends on the day you leave the Selected Reserve.

If your eligibility began on or after Oct. 1, 1992:

  • Your eligibility ends 14 years from your beginning date of eligibility.

or

  • Your eligibility ends on the day you leave the Selected Reserve.

JoeTip: Work Study

If you’re enrolled full-time or 3/4-time in a vocational, professional or college-degree program, you are eligible for a VA work-study allowance. Duties in a VA work-study program must be related to VA work. For example:

  • Processing VA paperwork at schools or VA offices.

  • Performing outreach services under a VA employee’s supervision.

  • Performing services at VA medical facilities or the offices of the National Cemetery Administration.
