TRICARE Reserve Select

TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS) offers Reservists and National Guard Members health care coverage similar to TRICARE Extra or TRICARE Standard. The program is premium-based and also requires that you meet a deductible, make copayments and cost-share. Eligibility begins after TAMP coverage ends.

Eligibility

To be eligible for TRICARE Reserve Select, servicemembers must meet one of the three tier requirements:

Tier1
Must have been called or ordered to active duty in support of a contingency operation for more than 30 consecutive days.

Tier2
You are receiving unemployment, your employer does not offer health insurance, or you are self-employed.

Tier 3
You do not qualify for Tier 1 or 2,  you are in the Selected Reserves, or you officially agree to serve in the Selected Reserves from the date that TRICARE Reserve Select coverage begins to the date it ends.

Follow these two steps to purchase TRICARE Reserve Select.

  1. Determine your eligibility tier by contacting your Reserve or National Guard personnel unit.

  2. Print and fill out a TRS Request Form off the Guard and Reserve Web Portal and then submit the paperwork along with a one-month premium payment to your local TRICARE Regional Contractor.

TRICARE Reserve Select coverage begins the first day after the servicemember’s Transitional Assistance Management Program (TAMP) coverage ends.

Be sure to include a check for the first month's premium and get the application in on time. Failure to do so will result in either your application not being processed or you forfeiting the chance to buy a policy until the next time you qualify.
