Traumatic Servicemembers Group Life Insurance
Traumatic Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (TSGLI), which is included in Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI), provides up to $100,000 of coverage if you sustain a traumatic injury while on Active Duty. How much money you receive after an injury depends on the seriousness of your injury. To find out how much you will be compensated for a specific injury, consult the TSGLI Schedule of Payments for Traumatic Losses. The Schedule of Payments also lists all injuries for which you will be compensated.
The Traumatic Servicemembers Group Life Insurance premium is a flat rate of $1.00 a month. The only way you can decline Traumatic Servicemembers Group Life Insurance is to decline Servicemembers Group Life Insurance, so you’ll have the extra dollar a month fee if you want any type of VA insurance coverage.
In order to make a claim for benefits after an injury, you must complete the TSGLI Certification Form. The form has three parts:
- Part A
You, the servicemember, should complete Part A. - Part B
Then have your doctor complete Part B. - Part C
Part C will be completed by someone within your service branch before the claim is officially submitted.
If your claim is accepted, you will be paid through an electronic funds transfer, Prudential’s Alliance Account, or check. Also, receiving this benefit has no impact on the amount of Servicemembers Group Life Insurance that will be paid following your death. If you purchased $200,000 worth of Servicemembers Group Life Insurance coverage, your beneficiaries will receive that full amount, even if you received a traumatic benefit payment.
